The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has announced that Utah State Representative Paul Ray (R)-Clinton has been selected to chair its Criminal Justice Taskforce. The task force is comprised of 114 legislators from 42 states. Rep. Ray has also been serving as the chairman of it’s sub-committee on sexual and predatory crimes against children.

On today’s Utah Policy.com, LaVarr Webb gets philosophical about our 45- day session and whether or not our session ought to be longer or shorter. Understanding the way our state legislature functions is not easy. For most of the state, all the things happening on the hill fly under the radar of public notice. It must seem as though the legislature surfaces for 45 days (or more accurately 33 as LaVarr notes) of chaotic, random action before hibernating again.

Rep. David Clark (R-Santa Clara) sponsored HB 213 last year that dealt with accrued sick leave benefits for retiring state employees. The new benefit law was challenged and the case was heard by the Utah State Supreme Court. The court issued their decision in the state’s favor last week.
